In October, Rep. Bruce Braley and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee launched a formal Congressional investigation into an Army error leading to hundreds of Iowa and Minnesota National Guard members being denied full GI Bill educational benefits upon their return from 17 months of combat duty in Iraq.
The Iowa National Guard’s 1
st Battaltion, 133
rd Infantry and the Minnesota National Guard’s 1
st Battalion, 34
th Infantry had served the longest continuous deployment of any ground combat unit in Iraq. The educational benefits are worth nearly $900 a month, and were denied because the Pentagon wrote the troops’ orders one to five days too short for them to qualify for the benefits.
